Spacing for a privacy screen is dependent on size at purchase. you should now have a garden year round in perennials, except for the impatients which you can tuck in all along the edges like little jewels. tuck in between bulbs of 3 daylilies, daffodils, tiger lilies, tulips. working out from the trees plant evergreens, and in front of those plant rose of sharon, spirea, dwarf bamboo, dinner plate hibiscus, hydrangea, other bloomers tuck in front of but sort of in between antique and shrub roses then plant things like daisys and cone flowers, place them in groups of three also, remember not too close together. these will be in your conversation clearing. then come out from them and plant in groups of 3 things like painted japanese ferns, hostas, and then impatients in front of those. rhododendrons and azaleas grown very well in shade. maybe one and a magnolia? they can take up to 60 feet. I would start with one or two large trees like weeping cherries. I will admit, i did not read all, but since i have created a few english gardens, i thought i might donate anyway. Some eye-catching planting on the right side of the house will also take your eye away from the huge garage door. This is where you landscaping can help out. A sky light would be good for light but it would become an unwelcome protuberance on the roof. Make sure the ceiling is painted a very light color to reflect light back into the entry vestibule. Next use a bright color on the front door to command attention to the entrance.
Sample some colors and stand across the street to see which one works best. I think you are getting great input on your landscaping but your curb appeal needs other work as well. I see chains for hanging planters, so that could bring in an additional element, so not much else is needed on the ground. Flank the sides of the house with some high growing Skyrocket juniper- like ( of which there is a silvery grey-blue variety that would go nice here) and some low lying sprawling juniper below and a row of lavender. The rest could be achieved by a little landscaping. In the front add a pair of MEGA planters on the ground. ) But Use them in the backyard or side landscape.
Sort of like a small Christmas Tree in a big room. think BIG rather than small.The planters you presently have may be fine for a smaller entrance, but for yours they look rather dinky.
By scale I mean you have a large entrance area. A grandeur entrance could be achieved by rethinking SCALE-because the house and colour is gorgeous and cheery in itself- I wouldn't change that at ALL.
